For The Love Of Vintage
How did you get started on Etsy?
I was selling on Ebay for quite some time and was tired of the fees the endless listing and just wasn't happy doing it anymore. I started researching online venues and stumbled upon Etsy in 2005 and was knocked out. I new immediately knew that this would be the place for me, I looked no further.
I opened a small shop in 1997, although the process was simple enough I felt that I had so much to learn and decided if I was going to move forward I wanted to do it right. I closed that shop and did my research into online marketing and all things Etsy. Finally in 2010 I launched Niftic.
The learning curve never stops and I am constantly tweaking my shop, my tags, my pictures, my marketing techniques, well everything really. It's just a constant process to get better at what you do, improvements can be made every single day, it's never ending and it's exciting.
What is your typical day like?
I must say that I am nearly on my computer 24/7. I'm up before the birds around 5:00 or 5:30, a nice tall iced coffee in hand I head straight to the computer. That is where I usually stay until at least 7:30. Quick shower and off to the shop where it is more marketing, team treasuries, team invites, blogging, FB, tweeting, photographing, listing and packaging when I have a sale. Dinner is usually around 7:00 then it's back at it until 10:00, then head to bed with a good book in hand. My life in almost entirely Etsy focused at this point and I am loving every moment.
I do take days off though! Every Wednesday morning is a fabulous auction just moments from the shop and I enjoy going to yard, estate and church sales. I try to kick back a bit on Sunday as well to spend time with family and friends.
Any tips?
Stay diligent, market heavily, get to know your camera, read everything that you can about what is hot and happening on Etsy, provide stellar customer service, the list goes on and on. Basically never stop learning and realize you can always get better at what you do, the sky is the limit.
Most importantly join a team that suits your needs, one that provides information, camaraderie, exciting ideas and increased exposure for you shop. The Vintage Etsy Society Street Team or Vestiesteam is the best thing that I have ever done for my little slice of Etsy.
Great interview Reana and great advice too! You are inspiring me to get off my rump and do more marketing! And of course you are so right - the Vesties are a great team to belong to!
